Quality management is one of the core central requirements of any organization. The important thing to understand here is despite the common image, quality management is not really a business strategy that can or cannot be applied. It needs to be applied; there are no options of yes and no. This is because in today’s world quality has become more important than it was ever before. This has happened due to variety of reasons, the most prominent one of which is the fact that people today are ready to pay higher price but would not compromise on the quality. This basic shift in the mindset is basically the origin of quality management. Quality management is really not a very old phenomenon and has come into the picture in the recent centuries only. One of the myths that needs to be shattered is that quality management deals in product quality only. It also works on the methods to achieve it, how they can be streamlined to achieve what is required and with faster speed. After the value that quality gained initially, during the trend of mass production, quality management lost value as cheaper things came to the front and cost became a major factor. But as of late, this too seems to be reversing with quality management again having a say in the issues of the industry. Quality management as would have become clear, is not a solitary process and there are numerous practices nowadays that tend to help it with its workings. One of them is the ISO standards that provide the guidelines on what are the parameters on which a company has to provide the services and what all it needs to achieve to get the Iso certification. The ISO certification in itself is not an easy thing to get and companies have to really work hard to remove the shortcomings before they can think of becoming an ISO certified organization. Another one of these strategies is the Six Sigma which focuses on the quality and customer contentment. It believes and preaches removal of any defects there be to achieve maximum satisfaction with the minimum number of attempts on the same product. Continuous improvement too plays an important role in quality management. Constantly and continuously improving your processes and methods to achieve your target not only results in better results, but more importantly it results in sustained outcomes. Quality management has come a long way from the humble beginnings it has had, thanks to its various fathers who at different times worked to come out with ways, statistical and intellectual, on how to improve the efficiency and strengthen the quality control area. While it was initialized in the manufacturing industry to reduce the humongous number of defects and flaws and reducing the wastage, almost all of the sectors today realize that the system of quality management is as important to them as to their counterparts. And that is why you would find more stress being given day in and day out by leaders throughout the world on how they can achieve so much more just by pruning their internal systems.
