Sigma Six simply is simply a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects. Sigma – six belts are basically terms used to describe the level of expertise that a sigma – six trained professional has achieved. Each sigma six project carried out in an organization follows a pre-defined sequence of steps and has quantified financial targets.

Sigma six belts comes in four levels and the first one is Yellow Belt or YB. This is the lowest level of sigma – six expertises and it applies to a professional who has a basic working knowledge. Such a professional can manage small process improvement projects, but they cannot function as a project or team leader.

Green Belt or GB is the next level of sigma – six expertises. In most organizations, this is the entry level of sigma – six and a sigma – six trained or certified professional does not work on sigma – six projects exclusively, but their duties include leading projects and teams and implementing sigma – six methodologies at the project level.

The next level of sigma – six expertises is Black Belt or BB. Such a professional will have completed an examination and will have been certified in its methods. He/she will be ready for all job duties, include implementation of sigma – six methodologies throughout all levels of the business, leading teams and projects, and providing sigma – six training and mentoring those with lower levels of sigma – six belts.

Finally, Master Black Belt or MBB is the highest level of the sigma – six expertises. On top of being able to perform all the tasks doable by the other sigma – six belts, there are added duties which involve implementation of sigma – six, including strategic and policy planning and implementation, statistical analysis and training and mentoring of Black Belts.
