Sigma Six - Sigma Six Lean Articles

A strategy in business management that was initiated by Motorola, Six Sigma is a set of practices that today enjoys acceptance and more importantly respect world over. For initials, six sigma is a process that aims to reduce the defects and errors occurring in an organization along with the variations that occur in the different processes that go about in the company. This is done by a set of procedures and methods, most of which are management methods intended on improving quality. There are also some statistical methods that work on the numbers picture of the story.

The background of Six Sigma as already said lies with Motorola wherein Bill Smith formulated the set of practices for the strategy in 1986. Initially aimed at the manufacturing processes, it is today eventually being used in other industries and fields as well as they realize its importance. The formulation and initial layout of Six Sigma was heavily inspired by various different processes that had become standard quality improvement methods over the last half century or so. These processes were the ones that had been tried and tested over a period of decades and had returned solid results and six sigma in turn was developed on their strong holds.

Six Sigma has had both kinds of receptions. On one hand, it has received adulation worldwide for the standards that it maintains while some of the experts have criticized it too. Some of the compliments like the work that is done in a Six Sigma project is sure to be good are what motivate the companies that have not had any experience with the strategy to go for it. Since it works on pretty tough standards, not everyone who thinks of going forward with a Six Sigma project is able to complete it. A Six Sigma project demands very high levels of commitment from you in terms of quality and dedication and that is why it has achieved so much value world over time.

Though it has been highly praised throughout, some of the experts disagree with the popular view. They believe that Six Sigma has been highly over rated and it is nothing more than the a set of quality improvement methods that have been just improved upon. While there are others who argue with the arbitrary standards used by the process. A research has also shown that more than 90 per cent of the companies that started with Six Sigma projects have ever since trailed on the S&P 500; not a very good sign for the proponents of the strategy.

Whatever be your opinion of Six Sigma, you cannot deny the fact that it has amassed a huge grip of the quality standards field. It is definitely a force to reckon with and that, more importantly it holds huge importance in the industry and the places where it matters. It looks like six sigma is not only here to stay but also change the work we way and more significantly, change it for the better.
